Skype is just insecure, and TeamSpeak has long outlived its purpose.

I'd be down to use IRC, although if you're looking for other alternatives that might be less obvious and probably not suggested yet but still viable, I wouldn't mind using something like Signal (or similar) or maybe an XMPP chatroom.

I remember this quite well.

I had a similar service running many years ago which served It's purpose well. Nowadays, It's hardly utilized.

Well IRC or Jabber would come to my mind.
Jabber would probably be the best imo.

Riot.IM is a good discord alternative. Can be set up to connect over tor

Honestly, IMO if we want something that actually gets used by people IRC, tox, and Riot seem like the best options
