Personally, I prefer IRC.

Skype was pretty big In It's time, but has died over the years. I'm not keen on the others mentioned for various reasons. Whatever gateway will be used, It's paramount to remain compliant with their terms- we do not want to build a community and experience another Discord scenario.

Another +1 for IRC from me.

Most of the places I'm in went from IRC to Skype/Slack and then back to IRC anyways, so I figure it works well enough. (alongside it just being my personal preference)

Riot.im is the best alternative to Discord & Slack, it's open source and end-to-end encrypted.

If we knew exactly why it was removed, then we would restart one and simply not do whatever it was that got us removed. Since they won't tell us, we have no guarantee they won't do it again.

I found an alternative called MatterMost
It has a lot of features that Discord has.
  • Works in-browser, has android, ios, linux, windows applications
  • Users can create private/public channels
  • Users aren't forced to be a part of every channel
  • Has a user-friendly UI

Looking at this one, MatterMost looks really good, and doesn't seem to require a ton of hassle to setup and secure. Good find Pikami.
