Important - Discord Alternative?

Since Discord disabled my account and our server was subsequently removed, we're considering other platforms. Unfortunately they've proven to be unreliable and as such it would be best for us to establish an alternative means for communication (even if the account/server are reinstated). Feel free to share your ideas below. We're looking for something that is accessible and commonly used.

Some of the suggestions we've received include:
  • IRC
  • Skype
  • Teamspeak
  • Mumble
  • Cometchat

I think IRC is a good alternative.. It's not such a PITA to use anymore now that https://www.irccloud.com exists. You get nice clean mobile interfaces, a web interface, and if you pay the $5/mo you get the always online stuff that discord has... Remember that discord is really just custom IRC with voice.

I figure Slack would be kinda hard to manage but is a viable option. I've used Rocket.Chat in the past and I tend to like it as much as Discord, with the only exception being a lack of voice chat, which could be covered by something like Mumble or something I don't know. Other major downside is it seems to have some glitches in Firefox and the TSUKIChat fork of it runs like absolute ass in firefox if anyone needs referrences. Although it might still be a viable option

+1 for IRC

Teamspeak should not even be on the list and who uses Skype anymore?

Slack looks like crap it is good tho but the inviting system, the style and its app looks like crap. Don't know if this is because I used to use Discord or not.

I'm not shooting Riot down but I just started up their anonymous demo and it was incredibly painful. it seems they put more work on the Riot landing page than the UI itself.

You guys should check out Wire. I've never used it myself but I have heard a lot of good things about it. HD video calls, file sharing and more. Not sure if it is what you guys are looking for. Just a suggestion!

I think the IM part is what is primarily used, and I would vote for cometchat or something similar. A lot of obscure services probably won't be used and may die out (as we've seen in the past when we tried IRC). SL used to use Skype back in the day, but I feel we had good reasons for moving elsewhere. It'll be frustrating using anything that isn't as clean and easy as Discord was/is. However, I am open to trying something new if it has good functions/features and is clean.

An install of MatterMost is also really nice, if self-hosting is an option.
