[Debate] Should Homework Be Banned/Modified? #1
So, I've talked to many people on many of places about this subject.

Should, in the United States, homework be banned and/or modified?

By "modified", I mean changed to the point where not all people get homework or homework is changed in the amount given.

So per example, this is my stance, I think only people with anything below a "B" should get homework. Personally, I've done very little of my homework in school, all throughout Elementary, Middle, High School, and now Middle College, I've done only 10% or so of my homework.

Yet, I always seem to pass my classes with nothing less than a B, I have never failed any tests or quizzes, and I have gotten nothing less than Advanced or Proficient on the CSTs (California Standards Test, or something like that).

So, that's why I believe that if you have a B or higher, you should not be forced to complete homework, I mean, why should you be forced to do extra practice when you already understand the subject?

Anyways, what do you guys think about homework?

Should it be banned altogether, modified, or remain the same?

I honestly don't see a use in homework. I think we are at school for a good portion of the day. Our minds should be able to remember the information.

You do have a point, why give homework to students that don't need the extra help to pass a grade or class? Its rather pointless. I do agree with you.

That brings up a good point. Most students in High School / Middle School are there for 6-8 hours.

That's already a lot of time, and then when they get home, some of them are assigned hours of homework and tiring projects that are sometimes given to just kill time by teachers.

Some teachers are finally understanding and giving less homework, though, which is good.

Homework is meant for students to test their skills by themselves. That way, if they have any questions while doing it on their own, they can get them answered. I don't think it should be banned at all.

Homework should be optional for students who have shown proficiency in their work.

I say this because I don't actually do the homework on paper, but I feel that it really helps to look it over and make sure you know the material.

However, a large part of intuition and talent comes into play here as well.
The average SAT score for my state is 1500, but I scored well above 2000 on both I've taken (2050 in 7th grade and 2200 in 10th grade). The SAT's I took were required for internship programs and summer programs.
I'd like to say that I don't do homework, I barely pass in school (relative to the average grade in my class; roughly a 94/100). I'm hanging on a 92 cumulative average - 1 point below the class average. Keep in mind that this school IS a STEM school and only accepts applicants who pass the entrance exam.
It would be too generous to say that even 3/4ths of the kids in my school have EVER done homework.

For other schools in my area, their average SAT scores were lower than 1400, their class average is lower than a B, and, not to be offensive, but they're really not very intelligent to say the least. I feel that homework should be necessary for them in order to give them a chance to compete against STEM schools like mine.
Out of the state I live in, my hometown highschool ranks #9th out of all public schools. My STEM school ranks #10th out of ALL schools IN THE USA.

I didn't realize the SAT scores were that low on average. :o

Never knew the scores were that low, I actually asked ~50 people what they scored on their tests, and 60% or so answered "Basic" or "Below Basic".

No idea how they got in my school... >.>

Basic or Below Basic? Damn, I don't think I've ever got under Advanced. But yeah, I'm like Phaze, I'm in the 17th best highschool in the US. Our average SAT scores are ~1950. 99% of students go to college. I'm in the same boat as you, a B is kind of like Taboo here. We also have to take an Entrance Exam.
