RE: [Debate] Should Homework Be Banned/Modified? #11
In all honesty, there should be homework but there should be no tests or quizes. Before I begin my explanation I want to say that my opinion is not because I'm a student and hate taking tests, I truly believe this.

My reasoning:

now-at-days teachers teach to the test, rather than to educate the student. The same can be said for the students' learning, we (students) learn to pass the tests and quizes that are given to us. I believe that if there were no tests or quizes, we would all be learning to gain knowledge rather than to pass the test/quiz. However, I believe that there SHOULD be homework due to the fact that it emphasizes what we (students) learned that day. In addition, though homework is annoying and takes up much of our time, it actually helps us more than the tests/quizes.

I disagree, if there were no tests, and nothing such as tests to affect someone's grade, then students could EASILY cheat through their whole school life by cheating on homework, no knowledge is gained.

Tests are to check if said student knows and gets the subject that is taught, homework is given for extra practice.

So, why teach something and not know if the student gets it or not? And not know if you yourself get it fully or not.

Not all people who go to school are there for "knowledge", actually I'm willing to bet the majority isn't a part of that group.

In the end, tests are to test someone's knowledge on taught subject, and a quiz is prep to that test, homework is for extra practice, which some students do not need.

How about this:
If you 90+ your test 2+ times, your next topic homework is not required, but = 85 automatically (unless you want to). No chance at higher.

Though I agree with you that if there are no tests, many students will cheat their way through school but think about it this way. If they cheat their way through school and not learn anything, they will not know enough to get through college nor will they have enough knowledge or experience for the work force. Thus, no tests is truly the ultimate test.

I believe that homework isn't really to make you understand the subject, its just to re-enforce what you learned and to make sure you don't forget it anytime soon.

Also, if you already know said subject.. It shouldn't be that hard to complete homework assignments, unless you have a asshole teacher that hands you packets for teh lulz.

I know I do..
