"If we wait until we're ready, we'll be waiting our whole lives" - lemony Snicket
Patience is a virtue but we'll always find excuses to not be "ready", sometimes we just need to go for it.

Interesting.. I've heard the phrase spun the opposite way.. Unless it was a typo?
probably a rewritten version. plenty of losers twist Niccolo Machiavelli's words because it doesn't align with their lovey dovey hippie views

I'm sure people like to twist phrases to suit their views. Do you find that being feared is useful / important to you?

In the rare case that I'm in a leadership position yes. Other than that I feel like being Machiavellian is of no use to me.
Of course, my school isn't as competitive, and things may change when I go off to uni next year.

That's a shame. I don't know what settings you've worked in, so can only comment on my personal experiences. In a more corporate environment I've found leadership by fear to be really detrimental. High staff turnovers, lots of office politics, and nobody willing to help each other out. However, new leadership coming in that people feel they have a connection/understanding with (they don't have to like them), ends up with the exact opposite. People want to do more to please and feel like it's actually worthwhile putting in that extra effort. Again, that's one setting type from the various British companies I've worked for. Perhaps it's different elsewhere.

Could make a good discussion topic on it's own.

True! Especially anything that speaks to changing how you perceive or emotionally process things. Some of these can take some practice!
