In the rare case that I'm in a leadership position yes. Other than that I feel like being Machiavellian is of no use to me.
Of course, my school isn't as competitive, and things may change when I go off to uni next year.

That's a shame. I don't know what settings you've worked in, so can only comment on my personal experiences. In a more corporate environment I've found leadership by fear to be really detrimental. High staff turnovers, lots of office politics, and nobody willing to help each other out. However, new leadership coming in that people feel they have a connection/understanding with (they don't have to like them), ends up with the exact opposite. People want to do more to please and feel like it's actually worthwhile putting in that extra effort. Again, that's one setting type from the various British companies I've worked for. Perhaps it's different elsewhere.
