Experience is the best teacher. Books are great to learn from but ultimately using the OS is how you will learn. I suggest grabbing Ubuntu and just screwing around and getting used to that. The more interested and immersed you are into learning about Linux, the more you will learn. Consider it like Linux boot camp. And if you get stuck forums or IRC are the best way to get unstuck (after you have tried to solve the problem yourself). Good luck, and don't give up.

As already stated really I taught myself to use linux and it's really not that hard once you get into it, it can be a little confusing at first but aftetva while the commands just sorta make sense. If you don't understand a command try the help or man pages then try forums/Google if you are really stuck. Good luck and it gets easier and more rewarding the more you learn trust me

In all honesty I think you are trying to run before tough can walk you should learn your way around the OS before trying to learn about the kernel as already stated you will learn best by doing so explore and if there is anything you don't quite understand try the help or man pages or ask here
