Why do people like Sword Art Online? SAO #1
So I dont want anybody to take this the wrong way and I want a civil discussion about this to know what your opinion is, but I do not see why people like Sword Art Online. I understand its my opinion, but this is one of the worst anime I have ever seen.

Ive been watching anime all my life and Ive seen it all from the age of 6 (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Naruto, Monster, Inuyasha, Deathnote, FMA, Watamote, Darker than Black, Attack on Titan, you name it ive seen it... lol) so I have tried to get into SAO for the past two years and each time I feel like im forcing myself to watch this and i'll tell you why.

SAO has the worst character development out of any anime ive ever seen. The personalities are paper thin, they frequently act out of character, and the two main characters are flawless (Kirito and Asuna), which hardly makes for an interesting storyline of trying to overcome their limitations. I feel like whenever they talk about his story, its already been contradicted by some action he has done. He claims to fight alone, but each scene has him with somebody. I just dont see a Sasuke or Scar like solidarity in him, its more like thats what he imagines of himself rather than what he is.

The second problem I have is the plot. This anime makes Bleach's plotline look like JRR Toliken's Lord of the Rings. The storyline is so predictable and linear that there is no real suspense in watching this series. Nothing carries over from one plot to another and there is a sense that the author didnt plan this in ahead (much like bleach). There is no real mystery and it feels like the only reason why there is such sophisticated action sequences is to make up for the lack of an exciting plot.

I could go on about the plotholes and inconsitiencies, but besides the fact that the Questioning of our reality presented in SAO hardly reaches James Camerons Avatar (i nearly threw up when Asuna and Kirito got married in the game), Im gonna leave it at there and I hope you get a good idea of what my opinion is of it.

Now I want to hear your opinion, or your argument against mine.

I don't dislike dislike SAO but I kinda don't like it but I like it.
Spoiler:
The main character beat the game by cheating and WILLPOWER. The had so much will that he was just able to get really angry and really determined and beat the game. It's a romance though. I shouldn't think too much into it.
SAO is a lot better than the walking dead though. They're both shows that have plot and progression with the occasional action. But with SAO, there's a lot of action. I don't know if I'm getting that I'm trying to say out right though.

I can't believe you'd even compare Naruto with SAO. Ew.

Spoiler:
Seriously, though. I'd ban people for watching it if I could.

I mean, sure if you want to judge it by the action sequences, its okay even though ive seen better... But idk, yes he won by cheating and willpower but he has no flaws or downsides to his personality, which really doesnt add much dimension to his personality or complexity to his struggle. Sure it looks fun from a action perspective but there is no suspense because you know what is going to happen.

Naruto > SAO

And yes, I'm being serious. I would rather watch naruto jack himself off in a tub of ramen than watch kiroto and his generic ass tsundere fly around with their faggoty fairy wings.

I could see how someone could love SAO if that person isn't really into anime or watching TV shows for that fact. The concept of SAO might win hearts as well (I've seen it, wouldn't give it more than a 3 out of 10).

I DID READ THE RULES and following @Oni 's request with the Spoiler that I NOW KNOW how to use (thank you oni)

Spoiler:
I thought SAO had a small potential (even though the plot was dragging quite a bit), until after episode 14 into "ALO" to where they literally took the last potential it had and threw it away, and then tried to dig itself out of the shit hole they made with GGO (still meh). The part I dislike the most was the exposition scenes at restaurants, I mean what the hell, that's like the one thing you SHOULD NOT DO in any Anime or TV Show.....

The soundtrack is not too bad though.

Hahaha, I'd rather do that and I would add getting system32 deleted and having a headphone duct taped to my head playing Darude's Sandstorm on a Loop.

I see that same thing too. Real Anime aficionados absolutely hate the series. There is a Anime store not too far from where I live and the manager is good friends with me. I asked him why 1/4 of all the stuff on sale was SAO. He said it was because it was half his sales, but only people with no taste bought them. The hardcore Anime people didnt buy any SAO stuff.

Spoiler:
SAO's concept is just about making it appealing to the MMORPG masses who dont have any real anime taste. Its like combining League of Legends and Battle Royale. You dont do it to please the fans you already have, you do it to gain new ones. The part that confuses the hell out of me is if these people are trapped in a game for 2 FUCKING YEARS and many of them are getting killed, why doesnt anybody notice? Why havent they been hooked up to IV's and have a nurse take care of their "functions"? There is so much wrong with this anime that I cant take it seriously at all. The ALO arc was simply the worst piece of Anime I have ever seen in my entire fucking life. It had more Plot holes than battlefield earth, puts Kirito into a Quasi incest love affair with his Sister turned Cousin while Asuna is kidnapped, and the restaurant bombing scene was so stupid, that I cant believe that Countries like Germany or France (who have had many restaurant bombings) didnt ban the series for that.

The soundtrack is good and I do admit that I do listen to it, but I dont give the Anime credit for that.......

*Cough* have you watched when they beat the game or no? Cos he wakes up in a hospital, with IVs and such, just saying. They even set up a special schooling program for all the victims that he attends, and he takes up physical therapy to bring his muscles back into use. This is all before the weird incest-y shit that happens between him an his "sister", if you wanna check to confirm.

I like it, as a concept. A truely immersive MMORPG? Sign me up, please. Beyond that, action.

Spoiler:
If they had gone more in the storyline and not made it so short, he would come more across as a solo player, and it could have had far more character development than it did. Plus, he wasn't entirely flawless, his lies got the guild killed and all, yanno. He had to deal with loss, but put that into being his drive to finish the game. I'll admit at times its very much that he's given godlike power, but I do believe that's because they made it so goddamn short. Its like watching highlights, cos the time skips around so much. (E.g. let's buy a house. Two minutes later in the episode, tada! House.)

Never actually watched Naruto, but I'd say reading it is actually worth it. Less fillers and more serious.

I dont remember when he wakes up but for some reason I now do remember That you mentioned it when he says he recovered from the program. Idk, it was a while back and I may not have even seen that episode. I still hate the incest arc. Finally, a worse love story than twilight.

I have no problem with the MMPORG setting. I think that it would have been a nice anime had they gotten a better story and more character development. But The problem is that they didnt seem to make a Anime set in MMPORG to win the hearts of real anime lovers, they made it to attract MMPORG Gamers who probably have never watched anime besides Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh. Thats why so many people are attracted to the series, not because of its story but because of its Action and Visual quality (I admit, it is visually appealing. I would say Eye Candy). But I think that for a lot of people who love anime, like me and yourself, we enjoy the emotional depth and complexity that they bring out, not just the visual quality alone. And frankly SAO is shallow, to me at least.

Spoiler:
I think the fact that they cut the series so short goes back to my argument that they are not trying to make a sophisticated story, rather just make it visually appealing and fast paced because that somehow makes up for that. And they are trying to attract MMPORG Gamers rather than Anime aficionados. I mean, i dont know if they even made the story longer, Kirito would have more faults besides lying, but I do admit, his godlike power makes it boring because, even though we know he is going to win any battle he is in (he is the good guy after all), there isnt any element of creativity in it because you know he is just going to overpower them. I always remember the FMA where Roy Mustang Carves the crest into his hand to incinerate Lust. I cant find that kind of Wow factor in the SAO fights, let alone Kirito's.

I watched the non filler Anime, even though it felt kinda slow. But yeah, the Manga itself was perfect, fast paced, and a lot more darker than the Anime. A LOT.....
