I personally like Sword Art Online because I can relate to multiple characters in it. Like the main female protagonist, Asuna, my family seems to dislike me. Like the main mail character, Kazuto, I have had some personal losses, and I have fought for what I believe in. Like Klein, I have trouble talking to people to start relationships. Like the player killers, I am a sadist and take some joy in other's pain (though only if they deserve it). It is a rather childish anime if you ask me, especially in season 2, but most anime that I have seen are childish.

I agree it has become overrated very easily, but it still has many good points to the anime such as the over all idea, it was one of* the first to actually portray the idea in a way that made it not only popular to gamers, but everyone. If you look at my review >here< I think you'll get what I mean.

Personally, I liked it. The first arc was really good, in the first game, SAO.
The second and fourth in ALO sucked fairy dicks but the third when Sinon was introduced in GGO was pretty cool.

and yeah, like @Six said, the idea of a full dive MMO sounds really fucking cool.

The first half (third story arc in the series) is awesome but when it goes back to ALO it deteriorates to shit again
