I have Avast and Malwarebytes at the moment. I used to have AVG but the stupid logger application that it throws in was using about 150kb/s download whenever I had my browser open and I wondered why stuff was a bit slower, so I got rid of AVG and removed anything it left behind.

I study malware in college. I study how it works what it does and where its going in the future. People here have some big misconceptions.

None. I'm not an idiot, and an anti-virus won't protect me from any exploits anyways.

It will pick up malware that gets added to your PC through any scripts that run in browers. For example Flash, Javascript. (always have noscript installed and running)
Also HTML5 is not as "Secure" as some people think it is so don't go quoting it as the solution https://www.sitepoint.com/security-risks-html5-apps/

It will also protect you from potential malware that comes in on torrents, if you ever download anything on a non privet torrent tracker you need to learn that while it is a free download. Most of the time its still not "free".

Or malware on USB's or thats on your local network?
It won't protect you from exploits no, but not very much will.

On windows a while ago I used to use AVG, but then Avast! stepped up their game and I started using them. I really hate anti-virus though, or any other stuff added on to my windows system.

I use linux every day. You should have at least ClamAV installed. Linux is not amune to malware and never will be. It has a nice permissions set up and that means that malware has a hard time doing bad things while running (unless your logged in as root).

Common Sense is a phrase that I disagree with but indeed being smart about what you do online will make you 10 times safer. The problem is that everyone slips up from time to time and gets malware on their PC's. It always happens and its not always avoidable. The NSA's air gaped network even got a virus on it. Actually do you remember how Stuxnet? worked https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuxnet all it takes is someones infected USB, breached website, email attachment etc etc etc.


On my windows Machine thats used for gaming pritty much only at this point I have Malwarebytes and BitDefender. I run a scan every week and I also run ccleaner every 3 or so weeks to clean out junk.

Registry cleaners like ccleaner can actually damage your system. The registry is a database of settings, for programs and windows itself. Registry cleaners can remove critical entries that are needed for your operating system to function properly.

I use it for old and background files left over by browers and such, not for the registry but thank you for the info. I don't have enough experiance to know exactly what I am doing regarding the windows Reg so I normally keep away unless I need to for something specific.
