I don't think we will ever totally lose the steering wheel, no matter how advanced self-driving/autonomous systems get. Currently, there is still a lot of (understandable) distrust for self-driving machines. Especially considering they're actually illegal on many roads around the globe. However, even when we are at a point where they become vastly safer than a human driving, humans are never going to stop driving, I think. People still race and ride horses, despite not needing them for the last 100 years for transport. People find a rush in racing and driving. I'll give you another example: The automatic car vs the manual. Many people still buy manual cars because they enjoy the feeling of driving them.

We wont completely veer away from driving our own cars. At least not soon. People are growing lazier and lazier in the US by the second. I really wouldn’t be surprised if we basically turn into the episode of Black Mirror (15,000,000 Merits)

What a great reference haha! It's easy to think of current society as forward thinking, and the past of humanity as laughable for being so suspicious of x-y-z, but we do the exact same thing to new tech now xD

At one point, cars and planes were extremely unsafe too. The Tesla FSD-beta doesn't look promising. However, some people have been on automated 93mph police chases, while asleep.

Absolutely, however the full extent of Its dangers wasn't known at the time.

Everything (nowadays) Is deemed safe, but Improvements are applied after safety concerns are reported or accidents occur.
