I watched the video in the OP, but I did not read the thread.

I can definitely agree with the man's stance on the treatment of pedophiles as ill instead of as criminals. Anonymous services, properly spread by word of mouth or subtle advertisement, would be a great boon to society and a help to many people in my opinion.

I want to also add that beyond a regular mental illness, I believe that the "whitematter crosswiring" he was speaking of could be highly affected by childhood experiences. I have a very close friend who we will give the generic name 'John'. John was sexually abused and molested through his childhood, along with his three sisters. He eventually escaped the his biological parents and bounced around from foster home to foster home from the age of 10 up to his teen years. He is currently 20. Knowing each other so intimately, he shared with me what happened and also the pornography he looked/looks at. Used to be large amounts of soft CP, just because he said that he enjoyed it more than regular porn. 'Photo shoots' done in Ukraine, and nudist colony photos. He told me that it doesn't feel wrong in the slightest. He looks at loli now, and generally steers completely clear of CP after his parents found his pornography as a teen and threatened to involve the law.

We both see his pedophilic tendencies as a result of his childhood as opposed to what I got from the video. I seemed to pick up that these tendencies spawned from some spontaneous illness or something that seemingly has no connections to childhood environment. He also enjoys regular, straight porn, however. Adults, nothing to do with youth. I feel as if the video seemed to imply that these pedophiles only wanted children. From my limited knowledge, this is not true.

As for pedophilia? I do believe that it is morally wrong, and if allowed legally would lead to a general degradation of the human experience of innocence, something I believe vital to healthy psychological development. However, as said at the top of this post, treating pedophiles as criminals with a choice is foolish and will only exacerbate the issue. Treating them as patients or the mentally ill with proper medical support could be good for society as a whole. I accept those that use loli pornography as a way to satisfy themselves, as it's not destructive to anyone, and is a much better alternative to other avenues of satisfaction. What I can't accept is those that can't control their actions, or those that are overwhelmed with desire around young children to the point of the children constantly needing watched when they are around. It is at that point that medication or counseling is needed. I'm sure we've all read the stories that come off of /b/ and /tv/ that, while likely false, are very alarming. It is at the point of a grown adult destroying innocence because his sexual desires are out of control that I believe medical help is needed.

I like your example of "John". The video only addresses physical issues and not developmental. I don't think the crosswiring changes based on development, though.

Pleading insanity is a useless legal defence unless you're up for capital punishment in the US. You have to be ruled inable to appreciate that your conduct was illegal, or inable to alter your behaviour to conform to the law. Only very rarely will that bar be met, and even then the success rate is around 1 in 4.

To my knowledge, pedophiles generally get tore up in prison, at least here in the U.S. And although from my post you would assume that I want them to be excused due to mental illness, it's just badly written. I want charges for those that act on their urges, with proper treatment for them as well and services that can help in the first place. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
