Man Jailed For Hacking Prison Computers To Bust Out A Friend #1
Greetings everyone,

This demonstrates the seriousness of compromising computer systems, and the ramifications of altering and gathering sensitive Information.

Quote:A judge sentenced a Michigan man to 87 months —7 years 3 months— in prison for hacking into a county jail's computer system and modifying prisoner records in an attempt to get an inmate released early.

The man, Konrads Voits, 27, of Ypsilanti, will also serve three years of supervised release and will have to pay $235,488 in restitution to Washtenaw County, the cost of investigating and addressing the hack.

Quote:Initially, he engaged in a spear-phishing campaign. He sent emails to county jail employees, luring them on the "ewashtenavv.org" domain, a carbon copy of the county's official website of "ewashtenaw.org."

Voits admitted to using the malware to collect and steal passwords, usernames, emails, and other personal information of over 1,600 county employees.

7 years is a long time, but perhaps not for someone that was modifying data pertaining to inmates.

Wow, what a story. I wonder what his motive was. Also interesting that the courts documents apparently don't list how he was detected.

in trying to help his friend he ended up like him, maybe with a greater punishment than his friend

Reminds me of Mr. Robot, when Elliot hacks to free an inmate.

7 years certainly is overkill depending on which prisoner he was looking to release. There are murderers that have to do less time. Also he has to pay a lot of money, in my opinion he should be awarded that money. Maybe he did something illegal, yes, should he be punished? Yes, but this is ridiculous.

He showed that the system is vulnerable and maybe prevented a dozen of other hacks that might have been succceeded in the future. Least they could do is give him a lower sentence... I still believe that all hacking should be legal, as long as you don't leak data/don't use your hacking for malicious intends. Though this is unfortantly the case for him, so he deserves a penalty, but not this.
~~ Might be back? ~~

And the irony. Tries to get someone out, ends up in.

7 years is quite a while though, ouch.

Judging by the following snippet taken from the article, I'd say this was his primary Intention.

Absolutely agree.

In my locality, there's been countless murderers who've served less time. This (hacking) just goes to show the severity of penalties Imposed for computer-related crimes.

Oh forgive me, I meant, I wonder why he was trying to free someone early. Perhaps a friend or relative.

Of course, now I understand.

It was probably someone closely related.
