I'm happy too to come across this still active thread and happy to take part in.
I live in a villa. I'm amongst the 40 % people here in Dubai who likes to live in Villas instead of Sky touching buildings.

Apartments, come In all different shapes and sizes.

Some hit the clouds, whilst others are only a couple of flights of stairs In height.

Apartment for sure. Although I would love to own a nice big house, I don't like the idea of taking care of the whole thing lol. A nice looking apartment is in my opinion a better choice.

I used to own a home, with a huge back yard on a massive block of land.

I generated a lot of time maintaining both the house and garden. Never again, will I purchase a house.

The cost of running a house makes it more difficult to save for a “rainy day”. When your expenses are smaller by living in an apartment, you're better able to save more money.

I would love a house, only because I already have an apartment. Also, with this craziness with Covid, the lockdown, a house would be a lot better.

20-30 years of rent payments could easily pay off the mortgage on a house. Houses can appreciate in value over time, whereas you'll get no return at all from paying rent on an apartment. That said, apartments normally offer certain amenities, like less maintenence/liabilities. For short term arrangements apartments are more reasonable.

I completely agree with this. I'd also like to add, in some places (especially in my experience in the UK), rent can actually be significantly more expensive than a mortgage. However, due to past financial issues or low credit scores, those who are financially struggling, may often be left with no choice but to pay for the more expensive rent. There are also many alternatives, with different schemes helping people to get onto the property market.

In the long-run, I sincerely hope to be approved for a mortgage. As things stand now, I wouldn't get a penny approved xD

It's the same In my locality, which essentially Is a waste of money.

I understand that some people don't have a choice, but at least with a mortgage, you'd get to own the property ex-amount of years later.

I suppose one of the key problems is that there are too many who can't get a mortgage as our house prices are so steep few can actually be approved for the mortgage. The average is over 250,000 GBP. Our proportion of renters was only 10% in the 90s, but is now 25%. Although, renting standards have improved too.
