Back 3 years ago when I first installed Linux, I DESTROYED my most important drive just by passing wrong parameters to the dd command, that moment was so depressing...

I admit to this same mistake too...always check your params! (do as i say not as i do right) Also had a bad time when a variable got unset in a script and rm went a wee bit overboard with rming...

Though later on I made a Python script for myself for using dd, it ensured that I don't choose any critical drives at all. Might share it

Worst I've done is try to rig a AMD 7990 onto a Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. See when I got my two 7990's they were like 1300$ USD a pop, and I eventually got my use out of them and got a 980Ti, but I still used them in my media server and rendering comp. So one day I start hosting a few game servers and decide that if I could use the power of the 7990 I could kick ass. So I open up the server and see that if I pull out this little conversion thingy there's a pcie x16 slot, so I throw a riser on it since my card won't fit, and plug my card in. But what I then realized that is since it's a pre-built cheap server, there's no available power cables to plug into the card, so I take a PSU I have laying around (of sufficient wattage) and rig it to turn on without a motherboard (paperclip method), and it works, so I plug it into the card, turn on the server, and it runs for about 1 min ISH, and during that time I'm trying to connect into vnc, with no luck, and I turn around and slide my chair over to it and it smells like nothing but burning plastic, I shut the server off and neither card nor server have worked since, ~1500 down the drain in 1 min.

The only cmos battery I've ever had a problem with was 20 years old, and it wouldnt keep time, thats it.

Formatted my entire HDD the first time I tried to dualboot Ubuntu and Windows because I used UEFI boot over Legacy. Fun times

once started my computer for a little while without my cpu fan plugged in (it came out because im clumsy), would've been an expensive fuckup

Same just with the exception that mine stopped working and had to be replaced.
