Quote:Payday 2 developer Overkill once said, "We've made it clear that Payday 2 will have no microtransactions whatsoever (shame on you if you thought otherwise!)," which was true until today's update.
The Black Market update has added the ability to earn safes at the end of matches that can only be opened with a drill item that costs $2.49 in real-life money. There is currently no way to earn drills just by playing the game. These safes contain exclusive weapon skins which may boost stats or grant special modifications to your gun.

Quite sad, really. The game's become pay to win, along having to already spend money for the game itself, and over $100 in DLC. The game did quite well in terms of reviews and gameplay initially, but in recent years it started to face backlash from fans and customers alike who witnessed undelivered promises, bad PR campaigns, and rude statements from the developers.
Interestingly enough, 2 years ago, the devs promised never to use microtransactions:
Quote:Overkill Software's upcoming heist-themed action game Payday 2 will not feature microtransactions, lead designer David Goldfarb has confirmed with GameSpot.
Asked if Overkill Software anticipated putting microtransactions in the game, Goldfarb bluntly stated, "No. No. God, I hope not. Never. No."

In addition to the update, the game is now fully integrated with Steam inventory and Steam marketplace.
