Honestly, Religion is nothing more than a sham. Its a fear tool that destroys societies all the time(look at all the wars caused by religion).

As for the ego part, I do indeed believe it's quite debatable considering I've met some priests who never talk about their personal lives with ANYONE but you never know, since we are probably the only animals on Earth that can voice their ego.

You do realize that, the ego part was not placed on individuals but, the whole creation of God is derived from an unaccepted ego. As I said,

Just because man has an ego and can’t accept it he has to externalize it into a supernatural being

What I am saying is that the whole concept of God and Satan are man's ego.
