Be honest with your fellow co-workers. You will get hurt, sure, because not all people are good-willing and they will scheme to get what they want but a good boss (and unironically there are many of them around) will see who is honest and who isn't. Honesty matters in business. Yes, it won't make you awfully rich but it will make you moral. (imo)

This is a pretty good point actually! I've found the kiss-asses don't tend to last as long as the honest types in the workplace. I've been repeatedly re-hired by a company (I did a lot of temp /fixed term work) about 7-8 times purely because the bosses knew they could trust me. Whilst I'm not rising up the ranks, if I'd chosen to stay with them, I probably would have by now.

It doesn't always seem obvious, but in a lot of businesses management (especially at the top), need a support network. Having employees they can trust goes a long way. You're less expendable that way too.
