This is a pretty good point actually! I've found the kiss-asses don't tend to last as long as the honest types in the workplace. I've been repeatedly re-hired by a company (I did a lot of temp /fixed term work) about 7-8 times purely because the bosses knew they could trust me. Whilst I'm not rising up the ranks, if I'd chosen to stay with them, I probably would have by now.
It doesn't always seem obvious, but in a lot of businesses management (especially at the top), need a support network. Having employees they can trust goes a long way. You're less expendable that way too.
