Subways in the US are almost always poorly maintained shit boxes that are begging to be terrorized.
They are actually a lot safer than driving.
One thing I noticed is that after certain incomes, people don't continue to use public transport very often in America. If more of the middle class and wealthy used it, there would likely be even more investment into making them safer.
The event is definitely tragic, but also something very rare.
I've got family over there that aren't doing too shabby and they almost always say it's more convenient depending on where they're going to hop on a train even though they have cars. I have a feeling a lot of the middle class uses the train system (with the growing middle class, I'd even bet a good percentage uses the public transit system in general too).
