29 Shot/Injured in NYC Subway - Dismas - 04-13-2022 At least 29 people were shot and injured at an NYC subway. This comes just one day after Biden announced the targeting of "ghost guns". Quote:Police are searching for a person of interest in connection to an attack that left at least 29 people shot or otherwise injured when a lone gunman in a reflective vest and a gas mask threw smoke bombs on a subway car in Brooklyn and began shooting Tuesday morning. RE: 29 Shot/Injured in NYC Subway - Drako - 04-13-2022 It's very unfortunate what happened. And this is a great example of why I'll only ever enter a subway unless I'm down on my luck. Especially one in New York. Subways in the US are almost always poorly maintained shit boxes that are begging to be terrorized. They are actually a lot safer than driving. ![]() ![]() One thing I noticed is that after certain incomes, people don't continue to use public transport very often in America. If more of the middle class and wealthy used it, there would likely be even more investment into making them safer. The event is definitely tragic, but also something very rare. I've got family over there that aren't doing too shabby and they almost always say it's more convenient depending on where they're going to hop on a train even though they have cars. I have a feeling a lot of the middle class uses the train system (with the growing middle class, I'd even bet a good percentage uses the public transit system in general too). When I visited New York City I remember more various groups of people using the system. However, in Los Angeles it seems reserved to those of lower incomes and many people overall avoid it. Also New York City still has a problematic car culture and heavy traffic. I feel often cars are sold to people on propaganda of heavy individualization while ignoring the societal costs, the companies often try to push how individual it makes someone for instance when in reality they get stuck in traffic or deal with fines and fees and frustration. RE: 29 Shot/Injured in NYC Subway - Boudica - 04-13-2022 Interesting how nobody has died from this!? That's pretty impressive. I'm glad everyone lived. I think the demographics using a subway/underground railway is likely entirely dependent on location/nation and other factors. In London, you get everyone from the wealthy to the poor riding the Tube. There's going to be some difference depending on location in London of course. Much of this is because it's one of the quickest ways to move around London. In any trip to London, I always prefer to use the tube system to get around. Combined with the fact the gun jammed. NYC is very fortunate, considering it all. |
