At one point, cars and planes were extremely unsafe too. The Tesla FSD-beta doesn't look promising. However, some people have been on automated 93mph police chases, while asleep.

Absolutely, however the full extent of Its dangers wasn't known at the time.

Everything (nowadays) Is deemed safe, but Improvements are applied after safety concerns are reported or accidents occur.

This is true. Most of the safety measures I could name on a car weren't even on the original cars xD Food for thought. Although, we have come a long way in health and safety.
