Use Linux Bible it's a big thick book that will tell you everything you need to know about Linux.

As stated by several others above my comment here: Gaining knowledge of the operating system of your choice and then applying that knowledge thru use will be the best teaching method for gaining experience.
Books are great, no doubt, and an essential starting point for learning to gain an idea of what to expect.
Yet, experience has no substitute.
Pick a Distribution that you find will meet all of your needs (infer what you're *comfortable* with), and use that as your starting point once you're ready to apply what you may learn from the aforementioned books.
