Open vs Closed Office - Nil - 10-22-2017

For those of you working in one of them, what do you think of it? For those of you with no experience in either, what environment are you hoping for?

I work in an open office which tends to be the inferior choice for most people in the industry, as seclusion and lack of social skills tend to push most people toward their comfort zone involving their own space. My positives so far is that it's very easy to communicate. If I have a question, I can get instant feedback and it seems people are more likely to ask for help rather than waste hours of their own because they feel intrusive disturbing someone in their space. I also get a better relationship with coworkers. I'm fortunate enough to work around people who I genuinely enjoy and it gives more opportunities to get to know each other and really learn each other's personalities.

A downside is obviously distractions. Generally everyone brings in headphones and will have those on when not wanting to be bothered or need to focus. Most everyone is considerate with their conversations, though.

I feel like the quality of previous coworkers strongly sway people's opinions on what they prefer.

They both have advantages.

From 1 side, I'd like an open office, because of the social aspect of things. When you work in a programming company it's pretty important you can work in a team and if you're not very good that this could be a huge plus in future companies.

From the other side, close office would allow to work independetly and in for me personally I feel like I would be getting more work done like this. Especially because you'll get interruptted less. Not sure how it exactly goes in an IT company but I'll find out soon enough.

I have an open office when doing big project for my company because meeting with several different forman is important for task planning. When I run crews for the iron worker side it is open office to as I enjoy working with the guys instead of being stuck in an office.

I have had closed office and they are nice to cause I could nap at work lol

Open air office with cubes. So at least my screen is hidden from others, but I do have to deal with the sounds of the office all day every day. I'd much prefer having my own quiet office with a door, even if the office was small.

I honestly would want to have my own office. Even though I love being social, I just would like to have my own office. I wouldn't keep the door closed, just so people can feel free to walk in and ask a question, or just to chat.

Good points. I previously had the opinion that it would be a lot easier to work in a closed environment in terms of productivity. But I find that I'm often much more productive in the open room because I don't want to be going on non-work related websites in front of everybody or taking a quick power nap, lol. Therefore I'm stuck working on the task the entirety of the time.

I would personally want to work in a closed office, mostly because I like being on my own. Also gets work done way quicker.

Sometimes the need to liaise with others on a consistent basis through person-to-person contact , Inevitably requires an open office.

If It were a personal choice, I'd prefer my own office. I enjoy my privacy and working without Interaction.

True. I guess it depends entirely on what you do. Given I'm doing software development so being in the same room with people working on the project helps a lot, but there are also many jobs that don't require that kind of communication with others and your own spot is absolutely fine.

I would be interested in working somewhere where I have my own spot or even small office. Get a taste of both sides.

I prefer closed private offices but either will have to do I guess.
