Power Surge/Faulty Power Supply - Oni - 01-17-2017

My main machine is currently out of commission. There were tornado/storm warnings early this morning and midway through the day @Jiggly and I heard a loud pop. Have a decent surge protector for situations like this, but apparently it didn't do much. It's likely the power supply blew out, or is faulty. It's also possible my other hardware was compromised. Ordered a new power supply and will begin troubleshooting tomorrow.

Anyone else had similar happen? Power surges are the worst.

Update:

I wouldn't recommend Deepcool or Gamer Storm's cases to anyone, despite how pretty they might be. @Skullmeat was also skeptical of them. It's possible the CPU/Mobo are salvageable, but I wouldn't trust them in the future. I ordered a Noctis 450 case, IX Formula mobo, and 7700k. I should get the parts today.

Do you have any SPDs installed?

If so, your PC shouldn't of received any damage what soever.

Would have, although I had a decent surge protector. I've had that PSU for 2-3 years and never had anything remotely similar occur. Praying the Titan X is unharmed.

I'm praying also, stuff losing that amount of money to a lousy storm.

Yeah I'm praying for your gpu. I bet you'll be fine tho. Now you can keep all your new cables tidy and managed!

@Oni called me about this. I'm very worried for him. It would suck if the PSU took the entire system with it.

That sucks a lot man, hope your hardware didn't die. I was looking into buying an UPS as well, but I didn't buy it since we don't have a lot of thunder (or at least not a lot of lightning strikes).

Good luck Oni!

I had a similar experience on a few machines, each time it ended very badly. Though I never fried any graphics cards doing it, I did have to replace CPUs and main boards most of the time. Hopefully it won't go that badly for you.

Good luck @Oni !!!

Hope you didn't get it as bad as @phyrrus9 did.
