Backtrack 5 wifi connection - Madderc - 11-08-2012 As I said in my presentation, I recently reinstalled backtrack 5 (this time r3) and tried to see if I could crack a WEP network (I have wireless at home so this was just a test). airmon-ng, airodump, aireplay, etc etc etc all worked, found networks and everything... with the exception that I got NO #Data at all, injection tests were always 0/30 or if lucky 1/30, even my own network had 0/30, and I was close to the router. That is one of the problems, then when using airodump-ng again, I noticed that some of the stations appeared below, but the bssid always said (not associated). With that in mind I thought that maybe since it was a fresh install, I needed to update my drivers, but the problem is, I cannot connect to ANY wireless network, be it my own or even an unprotected network (one of those public services that you go to their site, log in and have internet access almost everywhere). The problem here is that whenever I try to connect to any network it says: "Unable to get IP address"... on a side note, when I run airodump I get lots of stations and APs, and after a while there are so many APs that I only see one or 2 stations down on the terminal, I assume they get cut out due to size, like when the window is small and the AP names get cut unless they are being updated... so is there a code or something to make everything appear even if there's no room? In short, here is what I need to know: 1- Why do I get no data from any AP and why doesn't injection work?; 2- How can I see which drivers and updates do I need for backtrack?; 3- How do I solve the "Unable to get IP address issue"? (I have no cables to connect the computer physically, I need to do it wireless); 4- How do I see the APs associated to the stations; 5- How can I see all data, APs and stations when using airodump-ng? I think that's all for now... I am in a dualboot computer by the way, backtrack can access the windows data but not vice versa. RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - hunt3r972 - 11-08-2012 Unfortunatly you have to try with ethernet cable. You should also check your proxy settings in the web browser. I had the "unable to get IP Address" problem with bt5 r2 but r3 fixed it. Did you check if your wireless adapter can do injection ? I made this test: aireplay-ng -9 mon0 it did work however the packets received were very low, either 0% or around 3%... also, since I have connection to the internet on the same PC but other OS... can't I download the updates on that OS and go get them through backtrack? RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - chmod - 11-08-2012 You could in theory download source and other things using your other OS, but resolving dependencies will be a huge pain without a working internet connection, as for your trouble cracking WEP it looks as though your card isn't compatible with packet injection or possibly even backtrack its self giving your trouble connecting to the network. Have a look at the aircrack website to check if your card is compatible, they may have an alternate set of drivers for you as well RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - Madderc - 11-09-2012 (11-08-2012, 10:33 PM)chmod Wrote: Have a look at the aircrack website to check if your card is compatible, they may have an alternate set of drivers for you as well I'm not really sure which one I have, just went to the device manager and on the network cards I had: Broadcom 802.11n network card; Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller. But I have no idea if those work or not, even in the site: http://www.aircrack-ng.org/doku.php?id=compatibility_drivers#ralink_chipset_comments But I saw no cards with the exact name... any ideas? Also would appreciate if someone could tell me which drivers do I need and how to install them... thanks again RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - kruelmind - 11-09-2012 I mean no offense by this post, but part of hacking is learning how to do things. I understand being new, as I am still learning myself, but you need to learn to solve problems on your own if you want to become a true hacker. It's a long road but the amount of knowledge you gain when reading about everything is tremendous. Understanding how things work together fundamentally makes using the tools much, much easier. I also suggest learning a little more about Linux in general before diving into backtrack. You can start to learn about linux here: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/intro-linux.pdf Knowledge of linux will be extremely beneficial to your hacking interests. Just understand that you have a LOT of reading ahead of you. THAT I do know... but thanks anyway, I will try to fix it this weekend when I get home RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - Madderc - 11-15-2012 (11-09-2012, 05:20 AM)kruelmind Wrote: You can start to learn about linux here: http://www.tldp.org/LDP/intro-linux/intro-linux.pdf Again, I thank you for the tip and the pdf, I will read it and only start actually trying to do anything after I've finished reading it and have acquired a significant knowledge about linux... thanks again

I'm here to learn just like you. While I think your method of attack could prove to be useful, sometimes it is good to tackle more than 1 subject at a time. If you study math for 6 hours in a day, you will not be learning 6 hours worth of material just because of the tendency for our minds to go on autopilot or drift. If you study math, english, and history for 2 hours each you will be changing things up and learning in more fields. Like the old saying, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Just food for thought. Do what works for you and your style of learning. RE: Backtrack 5 wifi connection - Madderc - 11-15-2012 (11-15-2012, 03:35 AM)kruelmind Wrote: No problem. I'm here to learn just like you.
