However, not meaning to school anyone here (xD) but college isn't at all required, nor needed. It really depends on your intended career. I want to either go into game design, IT, or laboratory work. Two of those will definitely require school and college. However game design is a matter of skill, as are a lot of jobs.

Forgive me for my awful/horrid example. Take spongebob. He probably never went to college. But if you look at his house, everything looks nice. Out dated, but nice. He is a head fry cook at the #1 FF restaurant in town, and probably makes a pretty good salary. He needed no school and is pretty well off.

Anyhow, school should be required, but it should not be so stressed that if you do not continue after high school you will be a failure in life. Its simply not the case

I'm stating that university would be an unlikely option for kids if they drop out before 18. Not stating that it should be required for anyone. Tongue

Spoiler:
It's sort of well known that a degree will get you higher pay. Tongue

Very true

Also it was a reference eclipse. Not literal representation

You claimed that you were right because a fictional cartoon character had a nice house and job without going to college. It doesn't matter what you call it, it's retarded.

In my views, I believe education Is paramount In this day and age.

Whether It be a job you're looking to engage In, having a meaningful conversation In a group discussion, or simply taking time out to read a good book- they all require some degree of Intellect. Of course, career prospects will greatly Increase upon completion of college/university.

Although I do not believe that college as we know it today teaches our children the best way possible.

Agree.

A given college/school provides the foundation In learning. In order to expand and broaden your horizons, there Is work to be done via your own volition.

This thread Is about whether school Is a necessity, and your question pertains to the effectiveness (or lack) of the education system. Given they're both different (and to remain on topic), It's best to start a new thread.

Homeschooling is a great idea and I know for several families applying this system with their children. I also believe you need some kind of education, because when education level decreases, poverty is getting bigger.

Education should be required, School should not be. Hence, you can send your kids to school, you can hire tutors for them or you can homeschool them yourself, so long as they get an education whichever method you choose is fine. That's the way it works in the UK now and it's pretty good, because the public schools are generally extremely shit, hence I left mine near the end of secondary school and did a few years homeschooling instead.

The Education System is merely a state sponsored child care service. They figure that while they have you there, they might as well teach you something... but the system doesn't really care if you succeed or not.

This is why Private Schools are generally better. They are actually paid to instruct, not baby sit. They have better programs that are of actual interest to people. They may actually dissect a frog, as opposed to just reading from a 15 year old text book, for example.

But ya, people who say the system is broken, don't really understand the system. It would make so much more sense for secondary education to be a gateway to a career - but it's never been that way. (In North America)

My understanding is that Australia is a little more progressive in this sense though. I haven't been through the system but while the first year of two are typical of your american education - the latter part gives students the ability to take more specialty - related courses and what not. Some (maybe even all?) have work experience requirements that they must complete (in highschool!)

And coincidently I have seen exactly 6 instances of home schooling being quite successful. (7th is still in progress, nieces and nephews). Quite frankly - they are all intelligent, social, successful, people. In fact they are far more social than I ever was, having gone through the public school system. So how exactly does it fuck them up for the rest of their lives?

I absolutely hated school. despised it. It was boring as fuck. I much rather work on my own projects/hacking/etc. Failed a grade when I was 13. When I was 16 my parents kicked me out. Ended up failing that year. So I "dropped out" of school. I immediately enrolled in an alternative education school for adults. I ended up doing 3 grades in a year and a half. (mostly, I needed to do a 4th semester for a required french language course, but all my other core and elective courses were done in ~18 months/3 semesters, which should have been 6 in a normal school).

I personally think that given the option. Had I been able to focus on subjects that I enjoyed, such as computing, or electronics, or even welding or carpentry... I would have done much better overall. I had no interest in art. or science and biology. I had above average communication skills - even had a teacher tell me to stop using complicated words cause it forced her to use a dictionary. So English classes were a waste of time.

I agree with most of what you said, with exception to public schools being generally shit. From my personal experience I have found it varies so much. A school that was shit 5 years ago, can change head and then be incredible (and the opposite can happen) and we need to consider grammar schools. The one I went to was outstanding. There's always good schools and bad schools and I genuinely believe private schools are no different. There have been many private schools that have produced work of a much lower quality than the schools I went to, although, on average their standards are a bit higher (as they should be).

School is often what you make of it as well. Some people can be more suited to certain types of learning, but for someone to do well, they have to be an active learner. If they're not, they cannot blame the school, a school can't force you to learn, they can only try to make it more interesting and accessible.

Personally I feel school at the moment so full of idiots and there should be an alternative except private school for people who which to study.
