Should school be required? #1
I often wonder if school should be necessary. As in, 1st through 12th grade. Do you think it should be necessary or a must do? I believe you should be able to do what you want in this world as long as you aren't breaking any rules. Sadly, the counter argument to that statement is; "Well, we'd have a lot of stupid people". School causes a lot of problems that could easily be avoided simply but not having schools in general or rather a "home school" type of system. You take your core classes and then you're done for the day. I am honestly not even sure if I believe school should be required because there are two arguments are both sides are actually really good arguments.

What do you think? Should school be required for kids?

Prime example of a 7th grader who doesn't want to finish. Trust me kid, when you graduate, you will be glad you went through it. You might not spend 6 years in college like I did, you might choose to go right onto the farm or whatever it is you kids do these days. Short answer is Yes, they should be required. You raise a good point about home schooling and I agree with that, but it royally fucks that kid up for the rest of his/her life (I have seen it at least 6 times).

"Prime example of a 7th grader who doesn't want to finish. Trust me kid" What a bold and actually somewhat offensive claim you've made there. None the less, I am not in the 7th grade and nor am I a child. I was asking for an opinion from intelligent people with intelligent responses which I seem to have failed to obtain from you.

The current version of how schools are, no.

I'd like to see schooling, up to middle school, stay the same, because that's fairly good, language building and such. After that, have a secondary school system that goes until 16, that isn't forced everything, where the first year you are introduced to things and topics, then what you learn afterwards is up to you and what you want to build a career around. Last two years are done as you would the first two years of a course for your profession in college.

Not only would you come into the work force earlier, but better trained for it, and not filled with useless information that you will literally not need in your field.

You do that, that gives you time to save money for college where you can then further your experience and specialize in whatever subfield you want

Fair enough. I guess I made the incorrect assumption that the question being asked was "Should school be required?" and answered that instead of "PLZ PRAISE MEH HOLYNESS".

I agree. The school system now adays is way too expensive for what these children are receiving. I believe they let kids pass just because they don't want to deal with them for another year. I think if our school system was improved and actually not as easy as it is now adays, our kids and people in our society would be much more intelligent than they are now.

I say if kids don't want to finish school, they can go straight into physical labor for shit pay. Then they can see how a good education can improve your life. I'm not saying anything rude about physical labor but for a lazy middle or high schooler physical labor might whip them into shape.

Kids are too stupid to be able to decide for themselves, so yes, school should be required up till a certain age.

Y'all have said some good stuff, but one thing I think is off as far as education and the workforce goes, is the idea that college is the only way to go- college kids are the only kids we'll hire- if you didn't go to college, you clearly only deserve a job at McDonalds- it's complete bullshit. Plenty of real smart people don't have a college degree- either they couldn't afford college, their situation at the time simply couldn't accommodate it, any number of possibilities that prevented them from getting a college education. (Or maybe the simple fact that they didn't need a degree to do a simple job that they've been doing since they entered the workforce.) Yet some companies will throw out every resume that doesn't claim a degree. Folks that have worked in an industry since they were out of high school, are being turned down because of this "standard". Not to mention the fact that plenty of college kids go to school to work in their industry and come out no better than anyone else, because they have no experience. All they tell the kids is that they need to go to college- there is no other way. It's as if trade jobs don't exist.

As far as the question goes, I think most of us on this forum are motivated to learn things on our own. We've got programmers and hackers and graphic designers, here on the internet, that didn't go to college to be where they are. We teach ourselves, and that's the reason some of us can justify doing away with school, because it doesn't/didn't help us in the first place. If anything, school is a barrier to my learning. But should school be required? Yes, with a drastic overhaul of the system, simple as that. Even with the requirement to go to school (up to a certain point), kids completely lack motivation. They show up daily, and get nothing out of it; so their requirement is only partially met. Not to mention the select few that do drop out of high school the second they can. The few I've seen do that weren't planning to start another Apple or Microsoft, I presume they just don't care.

I will agree that there are some redundant things in the current education system, however, a proper school education helps A LOT in one's future. In addition to that, it doesn't just teach you thing like math, science, language, etc, but it also teaches you social skills. I guarantee that if kids had a choice of whether they wanted to be schooled or not, we'd all be a bunch of fat anti-social nerds who stare at a computer screen all day. And for people that are anti-social nerds who stare at a computer screen anyway, they at least get some form of workout through school-required physical education.

Furthermore, which one person do you think an employer would hire? Someone who went to school, or someone who didn't?

To answer your question, yes, school should be required.
