I'm sure people like to twist phrases to suit their views. Do you find that being feared is useful / important to you? I don't know what settings you've worked in, so can only comment on my personal experiences. In a more corporate environment I've found leadership by fear to be really detrimental. High staff turnovers, lots of office politics, and nobody willing to help each other out. However, new leadership coming in that people feel they have a connection/understanding with (they don't have to like them), ends up with the exact opposite. People want to do more to please and feel like it's actually worthwhile putting in that extra effort. Again, that's one setting type from the various British companies I've worked for. Perhaps it's different elsewhere. Could make a good discussion topic on it's own.
