I think you might be right there. Cryptocurrencies in general, appear to be moving out of the techie limelight and into common society more. At least, that is how I've perceived it. I hear more common folk talking about investing in the last few months to a year than I ever did before. However, that might be because I started listening more. Does anybody know if this is a common trend among most popular cryptocurrencies or is this specific to bitcoin?

Meh its whatever as long as buying things privately is still available. I'm a little more concerned about Amazon saying they have some way, or idea, on how to connect crypto currencies to the P2P involved in the transaction.
