Well there is companies working on a more wide-scale solution to this on our own planet because we have a lot of salt water that can be used and a lot of countries are surrounded by salt water.
The best option would be to boil it and use the condensation on a large scale because the condensation/moisture that builds up is drinkable kind of like a moonshine stihl, you can actually do this with a pot, glass/metal cup and a pot lid.

mars-one.com is a real program its not fake what they are doing is legit and is going to happen of course the first crew that goes up some time in like the late 2020's is pretty much the ones who will know for sure. Either way if they fail at it Nasa is still going to send humans to mars and do more testing.
But lets not forget even though right now mars is the planet we can reach that has potential to be changed there is still other planets in habitable zones much like earth that Nasa is working on the technology to get to but it probably won't be in any of our lifetimes assuming we don't destroy our own planet before then.

But again, having to boil it takes energy, whereas a chemical mixture we can just add to it would be much more efficient. And depending on the saltiness, boiling could just render you with 10% water and 90% salt.

I don't think any chemical could remove salt, maybe some fancy new kind of filtration system but that would need to be pretty advanced.
I'm not a scientist or inventor so idk.

I'll believe this when they get some sort of conclusive evidence. As It stands, the details seem a little sketchy to me.

Nasa has lied to the public before, they could be saying this just to make them see worthy and honest.
I mean the public does not have access to the rovers or to any of the technology so we have no way to verify it ourselves and images don't prove anything because they can be faked, edited, etc.
However mars has been a target for a long time and has been said to have the potential for about as long so it could be true, probably is but the chance is still there for it to be fake.

Life (replicating systems) don't require water.
My armchair physicist degree says that life requires a lubricating flexible substance that can exist among a large variety of more rigid substances that have several different physical reactions between each other.
Our base lubrication is water. Some of our common rigid components are carbon compounds, calcium, potassium...etc.
The odds of life appearing at our scope and within our (the popular) field of interpretation are ridiculously high.
I'm tired. Just posting in an interesting topic. I guess what I said is kinda related.

While the above is true, life doesn't require water, based on our own experiences water is merely an indicator of the possibility of life and so these types of discovery are beneficial for both colonization and potential to find alien life.

In terms of starting human colonies I think it is a very significant finding. If anything, it's very interesting as previously we thought there was none.
