My Roommate's Bike Got Stolen and There Was Video Evidence - pvnk - 10-28-2016 Outside of our apartments, we actually have cameras that point directly at the bike lock. His bike was worth $1800 USD and a thief came by around 11:30 PM (my time) or 23:30 hours and stole his bike. The thief worked solo. He scouted the place out for 10 minutes or so. During this time he had a lit cigarette and talking (assumed) on the phone to blend in the environment. Then he got a spare wheel and put it next to my roommate's bike. My roommate's bike has (quick release) which means you can literally detach the bike with a lever from the frame in about 10 seconds or less. The thief put his own spare tire and rode off. THEN! He must have knew how much the wheel was worth ($180), he came back and tried to steal that too. We have all the camera surveillance, but zooming in on the suspect's face blurs it too violently to even tell who he was. I would upload the video, but it seems like it needs a specific program to see the video. RE: My Roommate's Bike Got Stolen and There Was Video Evidence - Oni - 10-28-2016 At my old university, the kids in the area were known for going around and cutting the locks on bikes. I remember once a security guard asked me how much I paid for my bike and if I wanted to keep it. He told me that the kids could easily cut through the chain I locked my bike with with a pair of wirecutters. Had to go and grab a more reinforced one and later on it was littered with cut marks. My bike was only $200-300. I figure for an $1800 one, you'd want to be even more cautious. RE: My Roommate's Bike Got Stolen and There Was Video Evidence - DSVR - 10-31-2016
RE: My Roommate's Bike Got Stolen and There Was Video Evidence - Satan - 10-31-2016 They make quick release locks. Plus, I always thought bike ownership 101 taught to lock through the frame rather than the wheel. I'd always weave the chain around the frame a couple times.

I thought it was standard practice. I even got a lock that has this express purpose, reinforced as well to avoid cutting. But it wraps around your frame 5-8 times depending on how far back you have it from the locking post. RE: My Roommate's Bike Got Stolen and There Was Video Evidence - Customer - 10-31-2016 I had my bike stolen one time, but I knew exactly who it was. Went down to his house the next day and he had it in parts. Made him put it back together and give it back in front of me. People are really scavenges...
