We naturally tend to think and believe alternative events when something disruptive happens.
When we want to give ourselves an explanation as quick as possible, we tend to take mental shortcuts and usually fall into a proportionality bias: the more serious the event, the more serious must be the explanation.

Now... I had a very hard time believing someone hired probably the best sniper ever (and a sucidal one, no way he could have walked alive from that) to just let him... miss?
