I think it went like this:

It's often the outcasts, the iconoclasts ... those who have the least to lose because they
don't have much in the first place, who feel the new currents and ride them the farthest.

Precisely.
From what I've read and know, "Windows 10" will remain branded Indefinitely at this stage. Although too early to tell, If Windows 10 Is a flop (just like Windows 8 was), I'd say It'll be a wise decision to not stick with the name In It's future releases.

I find it hard to believe that this will be their last release of operating system. I think the branding will remain but the whole operating system will change over time and be nothing like it is now. So far I think it is an improvement on Windows 8, I'm not sure if I prefer it over Windows 7.
someone with no history is nothing but suspicious.

Much agree.
I think Microsoft should've thought Windows 8 through at the time of development, and structured It similar to that of Windows 10. The Metro UI and simply the lack of the Start Menu (not Start "Button" as with Windows 8.1), was what put the end-user away from using the OS, hence It's diminished sales throughout the years of It's existence of being the latest operating system.
