Most likely so the same spammer can't keep inviting himself over and over.
Once all of his spam accounts are caught he'll need an invite from an actual member.
It's most likely away to stop multi-accounting / ban-evading.

I really prefer this way, no newbies trying to RAT the community, no assholes trying to scam other, we know each other, who joins or gets banned, not a apocalypse forum, instead a really nice forum where I feel good.

A while back we started having an overflow of low quality members, and at the time Oni didn't have enough time to be deleting posts 24/7, so he made it invite only so that we had only dedicated members and we didn't get to huge.
