If you really, and I mean REALLY, think long and hard about this, it's actually not depressing at all. Yes, the thought of no longer existing seems depressing to us now since we're alive and whatnot, but once we're dead, we have no recollection of this concept.
Yes, it may not matter when we're dead, but it matters now, whilst we are alive. That's the point I was trying to make. If you are an atheist, you (believe that) won't have a religion in the grave.
