I've always preferred Android as a mobile OS, but I still acknowledged it's problems. I'm excited to see Fuchsia's potential to become the next big thing. I'm not afraid to sacrifice my apps to switch to a better mobile operating system, but it seems like Google has some pretty ambitious goals. Wikipedia quotes that it appears the code is designed to be run on universal hardware, everything from traffic lights and smart watches, all the way up to phones and even PCs. I'm ready to ditch Android but I'm not so sure about how I feel about Fuschia trying to be compatible with all devices. I don't know if they plan on replacing any mainstream PC OS, but I guess I'm just curious to see where this project goes.

He's right though. iOS runs objective C and Swift code, both of which are far better than Java. iOS also uses XNU, which is a better platform than Linux for the purposes of a phone. From the user-perspective, iOS is harder to customize, but from a developer or security perspective, iOS is far better than Android.

Android has the most ridiculous amount of stuff in it to spy on your every move that it's pretty much retarded, or at least you have to retard your device to get any privacy. My current phone, I opened up and disconnected the camera, ripped the mic off the board, pulled the watch battery... And the fucking thing could still suggest searches based on what conversations were going on around it.
You have to basically neuter the device physically and then go into ADB shell and 'pm uninstall' every process that could possibly use a microphone or camera before it stops being able to listen to your every word.
I can't wait for the death of Android, who's base was bought in 03-05 or something and hasn't been developed open source like constantly since its release like its other pure Linux cousins.
iOS is the opposing team, I suppose, but some of us do not like Apple, their proprietary hardware, and, I'm sad to say it, the hipster image it creates in the mind.
So I'll make another case for the Librem 5 Linux phone. It will be open source, with the ability to install any distro you want, and there'll be physical kill switches for cam, mic, and other sensors. You can make your phone deaf, dumb, and blind without cutting its organs out. It's said that it'll run any Linux image you want on it (I want to see how they deal with use of dual-machine distros that use VM's separated from the networking hardware to maintain anonymity), which I'd assume will include the doomed Ubuntu Touch for new users and something like Arch w/ touchscreen drivers for power users.
It lacks the thousand dollar price tag of the iPhone X and will be about privacy straight out of the box.
Now I await the reasons I'm wrong to want a non-Android Linux phone over an Apple product.

Alright, I'll take a try at this

1. It won't take off. Sailfish tried, and is failing. Mozilla tried, and failed. Ubuntu tried, and failed. PostmarketOS is cool in that it's not trying to be a mainline OS, so it has it's niche.
2. The Linux kernel isn't great, but then again, XNU isn't amazing either
3. iOS/Darwin has good security defaults, Linux doesn't. They'll have to modify it a lot to get it to the same level, and I doubt they will even try

I love talking OSs with you; I always learn something.
I think people need to keep trying until someone gets the winning formula, as far as the Librem failing. No one made a powered flight until they did, que no? I think the security aspect will be helped along by the physical kill switches of the phone itself.
Without eyes and ears there's a lot less for the phone to watch. And endgame security is essentially up to the user after a certain point. I keep an eye on my system processes all the time and have researched which ones should be there, and even the ones you can be paranoid about and still kill without the Kernel crashing. This is what any responsible Windows user should be doing as well. With a system process manager installed with the shipped OS, one can keep an eye on what's running or if anything is that shouldn't.
iOS is pretty pimped out and locked down when it comes to out of box security. Apple also has an in house dev team working constantly to work out kinks, no current distribution outside maybe RedHat has that level of development going on (and let's face it definitely not with the millions behind them Apple has to play with).
There are plenty of other, better alternatives out there to what Librem offers, but I say support their trying just in case they are the ones who get it right or even point future endeavors in the right way.
In the end, the Librem and the software that may come out for it are for specialist users, the likes of us, who give a shit about security. I'm fine with everyone else playing happily on their completely open handsets.
So yeah, you're right on that too, it's a niche market. I happen to be in that niche so I think it's super cool.
