How do WE need to believe in something?

To hope.

... Why hope when you can work for that something to happen? You just sit down on your sofa looking at the ceiling and wait for a car to appear when you can work, save money and buy it yourself?

That's not relevant to the thread, people pray to a 'god' to hope that they're life or another persons will get better in a way.

It is fully relevant. Why pray to God when you can help your friend have a better life or yours for the matter?

Some people pray to a god because they cannot help their friend have a better life or there is no other way to make their life better or if they need assistance in making their life better.

Indeed, I do know why people pray to god and that is the same reason I look down upon it why? You have been programmed to believe that somethings you can't do without god. Everything your non-existent friend "can" do you can do it on your own. The cold hard truth is that you have become dependent of your imaginary friend and have become fully useless facing problems because you think God will fix them for you. How many people have prayed for a better world and yet sit on their asses and not try and make a change? If you want something done you go and do it. Not get on your knees and scream at a cross for help.

No one is 'programmed' to do anything, anything a person does is by choice. Loads of people pray all the time and just expect something to happen I agree with you there but sometimes that's all they can do because companies or local shops won't give them any chances and people become depressed and end up doing nothing.

Also some people pray to a 'god' so they don't feel alone in trying to achieve something and sometimes it can help them feel as if they are doing it with someone which gives them motivation.

Some people pray to God for a better life, yet do nothing in their power to better their life. Would it really make a difference whether they believed in a God or not? They would still be lazy. I don't think God promotes laziness and you shouldn't hold religion accountable for people like that. Also, there are some problems that are completely out of our control. Not everything can be fixed within our hands. That's where God comes into play, and gives people hope and comfort, and helps them trot on. Not make them surrender in hope God fixes everything.
