What to do with DellP690 #1
I recently was given a Dell precision 690, its got 2 quad-core xeon CPU's supports 64gb ram (currently has 8) and 2TB of space, im going to order the full 64gb ram in the following weeks probably. Now im thinking of hosting a MC server on it, but that will only use one CPU&/Core due to the way a MC server runs, and ill only put 32gb to the server, Im not sure what else i should or could do, any good way to passively make money with it? Ill be looking around myself but CF members opinions are welcomed Smile

Thanks ~Jz

Holy shit, I remember you. You used to post back in the day.

Anyways, if you plan on making a minecraft server I would definitely suggest teaming up with @Alex to make one.

Well it could probably handle a ton of servers so try running something like a gaming community. You could probably run a massive hub-type Minecraft server and get easy cash.

If i do use it from MC only then ill do it for Sinisterly members and have a dontaion setup, maybe talk something out with @Oni about adding extra titles for members who donated on the server, for the forum. Since they are in-forcing the EULA and i support no money for perks in game.

Install XenServer or ESXi and then run several servers at once with the same hardware. Depending on your machine workloads with 8 cores and 64GB of ram you have enough system to run multiple guests. You could start with 2 cores on one guest and watch your workload. Most game servers are not very intensive and it is likely if you used more than 2 cores to start they would be sitting idle.

If you beef up your storage space you could run your own cloud storage. (recommend a battery backup)

You could run a virtual PBX and setup free telephone service in the US and Canada with Google voice and a SIP provider and then start a call center to sell whatever service you wanted.

You could host your own website to be used in conjunction with your call center.

You could create a newznab server to index NNTP and kick the torrent habit.

You could also do the same thing with Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8 and its built in hyper-v if you wanted to have a Windows foundation, though you would be running Windows all the time over the virtual machines and that would take more of the resources away from the guests.

Dont hate, it had Windows 2008 R2 on it just a few days ago, but that eats usable ram lol

Someone on SL who knows uses usenet besides me... you exist! I completly agree with most of what you said but PBXs are popular targets and when you don't know how to run one a lot of SWAT calls get traced back to you
