Backtrack offers a lot of nice tools in order for you to pentest a certain thing.
Tho the same stuff could be done from Ubuntu which is way infront on the developer aspect then Backtrack.
Overall Backtrack as mentioned before brings a lot of good tools but overall I just like Ubuntu more duo it just having a larger community and being more supporter.

But in general it is very good at what it is designed for with lots of powerful tools. However the developers of Backtrack are now currently developing *kali* so if you haven't already you could consider checking that out.
All in all it is good and I use it often, but I will say it's not for new comers to Linux (it can be used as a first distro but your in for a rough time) and is certainly not a good idea to use it for day to day things
chmod, I've used since beginning of my career : Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Edubuntu, PepperMintOS, OpenSuse, Red Hat (Fedora 18), Backtrack 5, MineOS, Arch Linux, Gentoo (Pre-installed on VPS) and nothing else that I remember now. I'm not really newbie to linux.
