Why would this be worth it? I think that you have the difference in power consume out in like 3-4 months if you use one that is build for it?

It's worth it if you have old computers laying around and most routers are not open sourced, thus building your own will allow you much greater control over your network. Electricity use varies greatly on the device used and for most people greater control is worth the few extra bucks.

I use this and a homemade yagi directional antenna to get my wifi, my wifi is total crap but I am bumming it from a hotel across town and it's free so I can't complain.
