Optimize Windows (No Extra Software) #1
Hello all. So for about the last year, I've been learning Windows as much as possible, and when I got Windows 10 I noticed that it pre-installs bloat-ware / junkware. This is frustrating even though it may not take up a lot of storage but it takes up a lot of RAM and CPU power. So, I've devised this plan that I use for all new PC's that I configure for me or other people. If you found this helpful, please rate my thread Smile

So first, just follow these steps (it's really simple)

- refresh browser

- remove unused programs from control panel

- remove unused folders in program files & (x86)

- remove %temp% contents

- remove %appdata% unused folders

- disk cleanup (press windows key and type 'disk cleanup')

- defragment (press windows key and type 'defrag')

- update (press windows key and type 'update')

- restart

THIS IS ALL DONE WITH THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH WINDOWS

By the way, when you're uninstalling a program, I'd recommend go into file explorer, click on your (C : ) drive and type the program you just installed properly and delete all folders that appear once it's finished searching

Now, after you've restarted go into windows powershell and copy the following commands as a whole, and press ctrl + v in powershell:

Get-AppxPackage *3dbuilder* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowsalarms* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowscalculator* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowscommunicationsapps* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowscamera* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *officehub* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *skypeapp* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *getstarted* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *zunemusic* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowsmaps* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *solitairecollection* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *bingfinance* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *zunevideo* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *bingnews* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *onenote* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *people* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowsphone* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *windowsstore* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *bingsports* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *soundrecorder* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *messaging* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *bingweather* | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage

This removes the bloat ware which comes with Windows 10. It does not remove Photos or media player etc. Just read through the individual commands and remove the lines so that you keep the specific software.

To remove  onedrive, go into cmd and type this in (one by one)

taskkill /f /im OneDrive.exe

%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\OneDriveSetup.exe /uninstall

Then to remove OneDrive from the file explorer (https://r.kyaa.sg/xuglds.PNG ). Go here and download this regedit script https://r.kyaa.sg/pcvrdt.reg and save it somewhere, then just open it up, and keep agreeing. Once done, refresh your file explorer then it's gone. Smile

I hope you all found this extremely helpful. By the way, if you're scared of the regedit script, here's it in plaintext: http://pastebin.com/dyi6jh1R

In computational parlance, all performed natively within Windows.

Thanks for the tut, appreciated.

For many things like cleaning the temp directory you can use CCleaner. It does what it promises and has good results.

As much as I hate them, stripping out the default apps can have unintended consequences. It can adversely effect the stability of your OS.

Actually no, if you look at what they do they are literally meaningless unless you need to use them. It's literally called bloatware not requiredware (is that even a thing?)

If they are set as default programs, they can. Other windows programs sometimes call for them.

Windows Phone is there by default and you can't uninstall it unless you use powershell. This is for tablets that run Windows 10. How I know this is if you go into settings > system > tablet mode. Most of the default apps that come with Windows 10 are for tablets which is annoying I know. Otherwise, removing store, alarms etc (look at the individual apps) they're literally useless unless you have a tablet computer. Yes store is for pcs too but it's a major privacy risk since apps can be automatically installed from it once you update your pc (try it), it's happened to me twice already. Plus, if you're into privacy removing these apps is mandatory.

I've also been doing this for the whole year with new pcs I've setup for people and no one has had any issues & neither have I. You just need to try it out for yourself and you'd understand. Plus, I did say remove any of the commands that I listed incase you don't want the apps removed. But I understand why you'd think it would cause issues.

What about disabling visual style settings? In windows 10 if you turn them off you will barely notice a different and it will run faster. Also what about increasing the page file size? Disabling startup services and settings. This is a start but these are a few extras that can't hurt if you optimize them.

Yeah, I didn't want to add anything more because I don't know how much stuff I should have in a thread. Plus, I feel like people would complain like if I said disable some of the visual settings. I personally prefer a good looking UI but really fast & lite. That's what I tried to achieve here.
