Nepal has banned the Chinese-owned app TikTok because its content "was detrimental to social harmony." according to the BBC.

Code:
The decision comes days after the country introduced a new rule requiring social media firms to set up liaison offices in the country.

TikTok, which has around a billion monthly users, has been banned by several countries including India.

Earlier this year, Montana became the first US state to ban it while the UK Parliament banned it from its network.

The platform is well known for it's content, popularity and controversy.

It's already banned in various ways in various countries and the bans don't appear to be stopping. Many bans have been to prevent government staff using the platform due to concerns over security.

Countries banning TikTok:

Code:
Afghanistan
The Taliban banned TikTok in Afghanistan in April 2022, saying that the platform's content "was not consistent with Islamic laws", according to Bloomberg.

Australia
On April 4, Australia banned the app from all federal government-owned devices, citing security concerns raised by the the Department of Home Affairs.

Belgium
Belgium banned TikTok from the work phones of government officials.

Canada
Mirroring other countries, Canada banned TikTok from all government mobile devices in February of this year.

Denmark
Denmark's Defense Ministry banned employees from having TikTok downloaded on their work devices in March.

India
India made moves against TikTok in 2020, implementing a nationwide ban on TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps, for "[engaging] in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order."

Nepal
In November 2023, Nepal banned TikTok for disrupting "social harmony".

The Netherlands
While not an outright ban, Dutch officials have been told not to use TikTok.

New Zealand
Following several European countries making similar decisions, New Zealand's parliament announced a ban on TikTok on all staff devices.

Norway
The Norwegian Parliament banned TikTok on governmental devices in March, though allowing civil servants to use the app on professional grounds on their personal devices.

Another shitty app. Shouldn't need laws, people shouldn't want to use it.

TikTok is just a medium of today’s social scene. Banning it is not the solution. Fix the social and moral structure.

I don't disagree, though the bans aren't related to people being toxic on the internet. The bans are related to issues around data security of it's users, therefore being considered a threat to national security if government employees are using it.

A very broad and difficult issue to tackle, social and moral structures, especially as they exhibit on a virtual social space. What would be one thing you'd enact/do (if you could) to help with that problem?

I'm always a fan of starting early doors and teaching people things from a young age but I don't want to default to "education".

TikTok is rotting young peoples brains. Being a way to spike dopamine, it is destroying their brains whilst they are still developing. They won’t be able to sit still for even short intervals without twitching like a druggie

I think similar was said of many internet based entertainment platforms in their infancy too (youtube, twitter etc). It will be interesting to see what happens as a result of people spending excessive amounts of time on social media. The brain is incredibly flexible and adaptable so "rotting" may be a strong perspective, but it will change the way people's attention works and how they process information. There are some positive side affects to shortened attention spans too (though generally I don't think of it as a "good thing"). For example: Skim reading to get to useful information and making quicker decisions about what you do or don't need to spend time on. This actually helps me at work because I can jump between tasks very easily.

Perhaps the real issue is as you say, those dopamine hits with instant gratification.
