Technical differences between DDR4 and DDR5 07-03-2021, 04:41 PM

A lot of resources on changes in ddr5 only provide "marketing-level" overview of the differences. Yes, it can reach faster clock speeds, reduce energy consumption and have more gb per chip, but what actually makes those things possible? If it is just better manufacturing quality, why can't it be done with ddr4?
I'm mostly interested in what makes higher clocks possible, from what i found out the power consumption reduction is due to integrated power management and higher capacity is command encoding changes, but nothing really explains the clock increase.

If you want a more in-depth overview of how DDR5 improves on DDR4, I'll try to give you a run-down from what I've gathered.
DDR5 is now able to access memory banks while other memory banks are being refreshed, simultaneously. This will cut down on latency, and of course improve performance.
For server and high-risk applications, DDR5 has much better ECC capabilities. Around 80% better actually. On the topic of servers, by default DDR5 will come with On-Die-ECC, but it is not Mainline ECC. Mainline-ECC deals with data transfer, while On-Die-ECC deals with reliability on the chip. This new On-Die-ECC has been introduced for DDR5 due to memory capacities doubling. With this x2 increase in memory capacity, the margin of error has also increased. So to allow more DIMMs to pass the factory quality check, On-Die-ECC has been created to decrease errors.
And now that transistor sizes have shrunk, power usage has decreased by around 100 mV. And with this transistor shrinkage, memory density has nearly doubled. This means that in the near future, 32GB of RAM will be the new norm.
Future availability for consumers isn't clear, but DDR5 has been available to large companies like Google and Amazon for about a year now. Some estimates say that we'll be seeing DDR5 in consumer PCs by late 2021.

Yes, module responsibe for managing memmory cells is now moved directly on the DDR5 stick itself, what does it mean DDR5 will have more electronics and will be less budget friendly.
