Idk, just the small smilies always gave me weird feelings. Especially small ones which are greyscale, fuckers stare into my soul.
I would just increase it to 20x20 or something, I thought you were gonna do stuff like , ,

Last time I made smilies for FR admins, they wanted it 16x16. They don't want big smilies next to small text.

Blue would be different which is nice.

Use a color that contrasts the grey/black background, so yellow blue and white are some obvious contrasts

Exactly! I was going to say the same thing! That's why the blue I chose is the same hex as the default blue theme, so it it would go along with the color changes
