hey im completely new to this world i have done some skimming across Google and come across Kali Linux, this looks like a fun place to start.

i have seen a few tutorials across various websites but i would like to read through a few recommended tutorials from you guy and gals, so if you would can you please post your links below and maybe why you recommend it, (if you have time).

I know that the best approach would be to write something myself etc, and i fully agree but my skills are lacking, i only know a little c++ and i am working on my coding so i thought playing with someone else toys for a bit would give me a little insight into where i need to focus my efforts,

The tutorials that would be suited to you depends on your end goal, Kali and hacking in general is a huge subject and asking for 'any tutorials' is far to wide. I would certainly suggest that you learn at least the basice of Linux before you even touch the tools though, if you can't use the OS you will have a hard time learning about the vast amount of tools available.

Yes, and feel free to try some different desktop interfaces for Ubuntu, too! Don't ever feel obligated to limit yourself to only a few set things with Linux either. For example, if you don't like the GNOME interface for Ubuntu then why not try XFCE or LXDE instead? I personally like XFCE, but you can go ahead and try each one out yourself to get a feel for what you like more. If you're interested in what I'm talking about, try Googl'ing some of the mentioned topics here and don't hesitate to ask me (or anyone else) any questions.

Too be honest, it does not matter if it's noob friendly or what not, What matters is what one suits you best

any personal fav linux tutorials you ppl would recommend?

after seeing a few simple cmd promp vids on youtube am i right in thinking if i become more comfortable with using cmd prompt my transition to Linux would be a little smoother??

If really depends what your goal is? Install Linux on your computer? give us some more to work with

well, there's really to much to go around as said earlier but if you have no issues with buying some books then i recommend checking dummies.com and search for linux in the search bar which will result in many usefully article about linux use and books you can buy that are easy to understand should get you in the right direction(just make sure you read the book description thoroughly so you are sure you know what it contains as there different books and editions....

also, regarding the cmd promp(we call it terminal in linux(a least i do)) while you may get more "comfortable" in transition from win to linux it would not really help in terms of what you can do as windows and linux use different commands for everything mostly, so you need to learn everything from scratch, i think the best to do is to part you HDD with Gparted or use windows disk manager to shrink you current volume and add a new one that you can install ubuntu on and try different things and play around with the terminal there until you feel comfortable enough to move over to something more advance, pretty much anything you can do in kali you can do in ubuntu, it just required you to install the tools you need yourself instead if getting a distro with everything on it with a bunch of tool you don't even know what does, also, you may learn something along the way when you need to install them yourself also, tough for the most part it just to type " sudo apt-get install [name of software here]" to install it and "sudo apt-get update" to update pretty much every program that was pre-installed or was installed trough the terminal via the install command, to upgrade programs then you just need to switch "update" with "upgrade" and you done:epic:

awesome info, thanks alot, i have just partitiioned my hhd im asuming 500gb is enough? and il get onto dummies right away, if im honnest i prefer learning from reading and marking a physical book so im more then willing to buy one or two to help me on my way.

500gb is more then enough, one advantage with linux is that it by nature take very little space, ubuntu is known however to be a heavyweight amongst the linux distro's but compared to win and OSX it barely take any space so you could easy use 250GB and you would still have no trouble having room for both the OS and your files...

also, if you go with ubuntu then i recommend heading over to the ubuntuforum for any ubuntu related(mint OS also) questions as im sure you would get alot more help in the area over there then here:epic:
