I always wondered this.
If I want to say this phrase to a boy or girl:

"Can you tell your mother to get some food, also don't forget to ask your brother for the money"

It should be: "Pouvez-vous dire à ta mère d'aller chercher de la nourriture, n'oubliez pas de demander de l'argent à ton frère."

Now the question is those ta and ton, should it be feminine or masculine? Because his mother is a woman and his brother a man. Or should you look to who you're telling it to? Like if it's a girl only use ta?

"Pouvez-vous dire à votre mère d'aller chercher à manger, et n'oubliez pas de demander l'argent à votre frère ?"

The familiar form for "tu" and "vous" does not exist in english but in france it's different, I'm bad to explain this but I try but yes you should look to who you're telling it to.

For the mother it would be ta and for brother it would be ton.

In French, objects like that work in that the my/you/he is defined by the beginning of the possessive adjective as m-, t-, s-. The rest of it, whether that is ton, ta, or tes: is defined by the gender of the object and not the subject. So you are correct that, for saying your mother and your brother, it would be ta mere and ton frere.

So as it looks, you are correct. You use the gender of the object in each case, not the gender of the subject of the sentence.
