Portable Apps 03-30-2023, 01:10 AM

I have noticed that quite a few people actually prefer portable applications above ones that are installed.
With the help of suggested sites and a bit of digging, I have created a list of websites where one can find, download and install portable apps.
I know this is more of a link list than a singular application, so I hope this is posted in the correct place.

I know this is more of a link list than a singular application, so I hope this is posted in the correct place.
- Pendrive Apps
- Website - pendriveapps.com
- Short list of categories
- My personal take on the site.
- The good.
- The site provides links to a lot of useful applications in a lot of different categories.
- I would suggest taking a look at the site if you are searching for a portable app.
- The site provides links to a lot of useful applications in a lot of different categories.
- The bad
- The site structure and navigation looks and feels outdated.
- Files seems to be linked from other websites and isn't locally hosted, opening the possibility for broken links, missing files or outdated content to exist.
- The site structure and navigation looks and feels outdated.
- Conclusion.
- Not a bad site, but it won't be my first choice.
- I will definitely keep it as a bookmark and visit the site in search for something, if I don't find it elsewhere.
- Not a bad site, but it won't be my first choice.
- The good.
- Website - pendriveapps.com
- PortableApps.com
- Website - portableapps.com
- Short list of categories
- My personal take on the site.
- The good.
- Again, an extensive list of applications one can choose from.
- The site provides their Application manager tool that will automatically check for updated apps and notify you if they are available.
- You have the choice of downloading single applications from the site or bundle them with their app manager.
- The app manager gives you the option to install to a flash drive or to the local PC as well.
- Again, an extensive list of applications one can choose from.
- The bad.
- The website keeps within the borders of legal, free and open source applications. So if you are looking for a paid application that is made to be a portable version, you probably won't find it here.

- Conclusion.
- It is and has been my choice of portable apps for a while purely because of the app manager. I work with a vast variety of apps, and I am just way too lazy to first visit 10 sites in search of updates before I start using the apps.

- The good.
- Website - portableapps.com
- FCPortables
- Website - www.fcportables.com
- Short list of categories
- My personal take on the site.
- The good.
- Again, an extensive list of applications one can choose from.
- Website has extra content that they provide, like how to make a portable app or creating a bootable USB
- Again, an extensive list of applications one can choose from.
- The bad.
- Files are, as with the first website in the list, not hosted locally. They seem to be linked to a file hosting site.
- Keeping the apps on a file hosting site nearly always encourages you to buy their service in order to download at full speeds, so there's ads.
- Not having purchased the service will delay your download for a couple of seconds and also slow down your download speed.
- Files are, as with the first website in the list, not hosted locally. They seem to be linked to a file hosting site.
- Conclusion.
- If you are set on getting a specific portable app, and it's not available anywhere else, the site might be an option you can consider.
- I would rather go to my favourite torrent site in search of portable apps than look on the website.
- If you are set on getting a specific portable app, and it's not available anywhere else, the site might be an option you can consider.
- The good.
- Website - www.fcportables.com
- PortableAppZ
- Website - portableappz.blogspot.com
- Short list of categories
- My personal take on the site.
- The good.
- The website seems to have been built on top of a WordPress-like infrastructure, which means it's a Blog. This is beneficial if you want to search for applications according to the release date or category.
- The site is nicely organized and seems to be a good choice to consider if you are looking for portable apps.
- The website seems to have been built on top of a WordPress-like infrastructure, which means it's a Blog. This is beneficial if you want to search for applications according to the release date or category.
- The bad.
- The site defaulted my connection to http, and I had to type https in my browser navigation bar to force it to use a secure connection. This might be my internet, as it has been acting up lately. I do feel that the owner could have done the extra effort to redirect and force a https connection
- The list of available apps seems underwhelming if one was to compare it to the other sites.
- As with the previous site, the files are stored on a file hosting site, which as I have said slows the download and gives you ads. That is, if you don't purchase the file hosing services or already own a subscription.

- Conclusion.
- The content provided seems to be good quality apps, even if the apps lack proper descriptions.
- It's not a bad site to check out when looking for a portable app.
- I am sure there must be more apps available than what is led to believe by the initial first look.
- Due to the fact that a file hosting service is used and that the site is missing enthusiasm, I would probably not use the site unless it is my last option.
- Side note: I am saying enthusiasm, but only because it's the closest word I could find that almost describes what the site looks like to me. It's not bad, and the site has heart. It just lacks a little TLC, time and effort.

- SyMenu
- Website - https://www.ugmfree.it/
- Catagories - Available apps can be searched by name or filtered by category here. SyMenuSuite
- My personal take on the site/app.
- The good.
- As with some of the others mentioned, there is an extensive list of apps that has full descriptions of the app.
- The site provides an application manager to assist in updates and ease of access.
- The site provides a tool to create your own portable apps that can be added to the application manager.
- SyMenu has received permission from Nirsoft to host their applications on the site and in the application manager.
- As with some of the others mentioned, there is an extensive list of apps that has full descriptions of the app.
- The bad.
- I couldn't filter the apps on the site by category unless I search for that category. This is not much of an issue, it just makes it difficult to visualize the category hierarchy.
- I couldn't find a portable version of an app that was available for download from their site. Again, not an issue as they do provide a link to the apps original page where it can be downloaded from. It's just that not all portable apps are made that way by the company creating them, in which case the link provided will take you to a third party's site that could possibly be cluttered with junk (not saying they are or definitely will be, just saying there is a possibility for it).
- The application manager doesn't install to your system, it is just extracted to a folder. I can understand why this is done (it's a portable app for portable apps), it just requires a little bit of technical knowledge to set it up to start with your system or to autorun from a flash when it's inserted, if that is what you require.
- I couldn't filter the apps on the site by category unless I search for that category. This is not much of an issue, it just makes it difficult to visualize the category hierarchy.
- Conclusion.
- I don't like the website as much, but I do like the application manager provided. It seems to have decent functionality and there are truly a lot of applications to choose from.
- I like that the application and the site provides a description of what the application does.
- I don't particularly like the sub categories of categories when browsing the applications. It might just be me, just feels like it becomes cluttered due to the amount of categories.
- I really like that it includes apps from Nirsoft. I have been using their apps since as far back as I can remember. Their tools have saved countless hours worth of headache with users not knowing their passwords. This alone is enough for me to keep using the app going forward.
