Police See Through Walls? #1
Apparently over 50 law enforcement agencies including the FBI have been using this device. The device costs $6000 each unit. I am unsure of how I feel about this. Do you guys believe they should be allowed to use these devices? If so, should they be available to civilians as well?

Code:
The device, dubbed Range-R, sends out radio waves that can detect the slightest movements, including breathing, from as much as 50 feet away, as a police officer during the court hearing described the Range-R (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1505139-suppression-hearing-transcript.html#document/p63/a198022) as a "hand-held Doppler radar device. It picks up breathing, human breathing and movement within a house."

This seems like something straight out of a video game. This could be useful though. I think this should also be used for medical purposes and in disastrous places where it's hard to find people under all the rubble.

Absolutely crazy technology, could be very useful to view grow-ops, etc.

Yeah man honestly this is a legit new device and also just about the biggest invasion of privacy since the the beginning of Time. I mean they always had infrared to check for heat lamps and what not but you can literally see through walls with this.
like seriously what's next?

Ask yourself the implications something like this could have on the plain view doctrine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plain_view_doctrine

"The plain view doctrine allows an officer to seize – without a warrant – evidence and contraband found in plain view during a lawful observation. This doctrine is also regularly used by TSA Federal Government Officers while screening persons and property at U.S. airports.

For the plain view doctrine to apply for discoveries, the three-prong Horton test requires:

the officer to be lawfully present at the place where the evidence can be plainly viewed,
the officer to have a lawful right of access to the object, and
the incriminating character of the object to be “immediately apparent.”
In order for the officer to seize the item, the officer must have probable cause to believe the item is evidence of a crime or is contraband. The police may not move objects to get a better view. In Arizona v. Hicks, 480 U.S. 321 (1987), the officer was found to have acted unlawfully. While investigating a shooting, the officer moved, without probable cause, stereo equipment to record the serial numbers. The plain view doctrine has also been expanded to include the sub doctrines of plain feel, plain smell, and plain hearing.[1]

In Horton v. California 496 U.S. 128 (1990), the court eliminated the requirement that the discovery of evidence in plain view be inadvertent, a requirement that had led to difficulties in defining "inadvertent discovery."[2][3][4]"

It doesn't actually let you see through walls, but let's the user know that there is a person behind that a wall and how far that person is. The device shows a green indicator if there is a person and a digital meter on how far it has checked the room.

Device that sensitive, bound to be bugs. And exploits. Also likely detectable, radar can also be shielded, tricked, etc.

As neat and proper as they may make it sound to be, it could very potentially be a waste against simple things. Love to get my hands on one, just to break and abuse. See just how falliable it could be. iirc they can do a similar thing with WiFi that allows them to map out rooms, maybe it was a theory. But it at least seems more solid than radio.
