Today I was with my uncle and we were just driving around conversing about different subjects regarding politics and science. My uncle has always been the only person I look up to, today I saw him drop tears of pure sadness. Why is this shocking to me? He is a decorated soldier, with more than 25 years serving in the army. He was a medic in Iraq, the man has lived and seen pure hell.

While we were driving, we stopped in a bar to get a beer (OH HOLY SHIT NO! >.<) and we saw an army veteran without a hand. Knowing my uncle has seen many brave men lose their arms, legs, eyes, I thought he was used to it. The veteran was pretending a broom was an assault rifle. He was re-living the moment he lost his arm, but he wasn’t drunk or under the influence of any type of substance. (The bar tender doesn’t sell him anything) he was crazy. My uncle’s eyes watered and he walked towards him. Stood him up and saluted him, and said “You are a hero, go home” in that moment the veteran kind of regained consciousness and got back (mentally) he started crying. No words came out of the veteran’s mouth, he was only proud.

I can’t imagine what happened to the old veteran, but whatever it was, I know that regardless his mild insanity he is still a hero. A brave man that followed orders, despite what they were. Even as a crazy man, he still deserves the respect that he rightfully earned.

Holy crap, this is actually saddening. (I actually teared up, no joke). I respect your uncle for doing what he did. My family is somewhat of a military family and I hope to whatever I can hope to that he doesn't come back messed up.

I would enroll in the military but, I don't think I am strong enough for it. My uncle became and alcoholic and recovered. Drowning his memories in a bottle of alcohol, I guess that is why he understood the old veteran.

I mean, my grandfather is kinda fucked up from the military but besides that he's ok. He hasn't had a outburst like that but its obvious that this man who lost his hand had no one to talk to it about and probably has PTSD.

Very sad to read, I nearly shed a tear and all my respects go out to your uncle.
